The winter website checklist for lawn care

Work through this between November and February, one or two lines a week. Tick a box only when the test under it is true on your site today, looked at on a phone.

November: check what you've got

  • Phone number that dials
You've got it if tapping the number on your phone starts a call to a phone you answer.
  • Contact form that arrives
You've got it if a test message you sent yourself landed in an inbox you check daily.
  • Readable on a phone
You've got it if you can read every page and hit every button without pinching or zooming.
  • Easy to change
You've got it if you know who updates a price on your site and how long it takes them.

December: season prices and plans

  • A "from" price for weekly mowing
You've got it if a homeowner can see what a typical lot costs per visit without calling.
  • How bigger lots get priced
You've got it if one line explains that you measure and give a written price before the first cut.
  • One-time jobs with prices
You've got it if spring cleanup, leaf cleanup, mulch and aeration each show a starting price (only the ones you sell).
  • Rain, skips and contracts
You've got it if a customer can read what happens when it rains on their day and whether they can skip a week.

January: spring signup page

  • A page for next season's signups
You've got it if one link takes a homeowner straight to your plans, prices and start week.
  • What each visit includes
You've got it if someone can tell whether edging, trimming and blowing off the drive are part of the price.
  • A short recurring-service signup form
You've got it if it asks for name, address, phone or email, and plan, and nothing else is required.
  • Last year's customers invited
You've got it if every customer from last season got a text with the signup link.

February: photos, reviews and service area

  • Your own photos
You've got it if every lawn, truck and crew photo on the site is yours and from the last two seasons.
  • Review asks sent
You've got it if your happiest customers got a personal text with your Google review link, with nothing offered in return.
  • Towns you want listed
You've got it if the site names the towns on your route and leaves out the ones you'd rather not drive to.
  • Service area easy to find
You've got it if a homeowner can tell from the first screen whether you come to their town.

March: answer fast

  • A saved text-back reply
You've got it if your phone has a reply with their town, your route day, your "from" price and two days to choose from.
  • Same-day replies
You've got it if every call and signup from last week got an answer before the end of that day.
  • Voicemail points to the signup page
You've got it if a caller who hangs up still hears where to sign up online.

Quick test before March: hand your phone to a neighbor, open your site and ask them what a weekly cut costs and whether you mow their street. If they can't answer in under a minute, that's your next fix.
